Jigokudai Monkey Park lies in the Yaanouchi, Shimotakai District, Nogano Prefecture of Japan
I spent four days at this park, staying at the local Korakukan Inn in mid February of 2007. We drove up to the park before dawn and stayed all day photographing the dozens of monkeys and their families come to the hot springs to bathe in the cold winter days. They were cognizant of our
presence but were not concerned. The mothers teaching their young the techniques of bathing and swimming in the steaming waters. It was a unique experience and I took many photos and made a slide show which I have shown to numerous groups since then.
This is a young Japanese macaque snow monkey in the winter in warmth of hot springs of the JIgokudani Monkey Park. Families of monkeys come down
from the mountains to bathe in these hot springs. This young macaque was taping his head and examining his fingers at the same time which I believe both he and I found inquisitive and amusing.
