The semi-arid Kalahari Desert, in southern Botswana, known for its blistering hot summers, limited rainfall, and scant surface water, is home to a variety of resident and migratory animals and birds. Here, as this iconic African photo depicts, a large male elephant (Loxodonta) and Burchell’s zebras (Equus quagga burchellii) were gathering, at day’s end, to drink at a lone waterhole, a short distance away.
