Lions (Panthera leo) stalk their prey with great cunning and in virtual silence, made evident to me while on safari in the Kalahari Desert not long ago. There, while observing game from our parked Land Rover early one morning, I suddenly realized the presence of a young adult lion moving towards the rear of our vehicle; over the course of several minutes he had emerged from a ticket and approached us completely undetected through shoulder-high grass, rustling not a blade. Startled, given he was not more than a meter or so away, I somehow managed to get this shot.
