Description
Each year, Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) return to Bombay Hook NWR in Smyrna, Delaware, USA, for their summer breeding season. Upon arrival, mating pairs attempt to set up residence in one of the many nesting boxes in the refuge, but not without stiff competition from other newly arrived swallows. Successful mating involves claiming and defending a chosen territory as shown here with three adults battling over one potential home.
