Red foxes usually form monogamous pairs, but during the previous five days, these two female foxes (or vixens) had been observed sharing the responsibilities of raising four kits without a male in sight. They interchangeably fed the cubs, both nursing and bringing rabbits and the occasional black-tailed deer fawn. But on this particular afternoon, the vixens had a quarrel about who would hand off the large rabbit to the anxiously waiting kits. Fortunately, the scuffle lasted only a few seconds, and the adult foxes returned to jointly care for the cubs.
