A juvenile great blue heron lifts vertically from the nest for the first time. I had been watching these two heron chicks from their birth. This was the first time I saw one of the juveniles try to fly. It lifted its wings and flapped them vigorously. The chick was able to lift vertically for a few feet. The sibling heron tried a few days later and was able to accomplish the same height.
