Sao Jose do Rio Claro is a small town in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. It is in west-central Brazil at the southern edge of the Amazon basin. This photo was taken at the Jardim da Amazonia eco-lodge a few miles south of the town right along the Claro River.

I had the opportunity to travel to the southern Amazon basin in late May. I was focused on trying to get photographs of some of the beautiful bird life of this region, but I happened to look over at a group of about twenty capybaras that had been lounging along the edge of the Rio Claro since sunrise. I'd gotten some shots of them earlier, but this time there was this really nice tender moment between an adult and a juvenile. Fortunately I was able to get my camera around and focused in time to capture one frame before they moved apart again!
