Canon 1DMKIII, 70-200 lens @140mm, ISO 500, 1/500 sec @f/5.6. Shot handheld from the bow of a Zodiac. On a expedition ice breaker I was lucking to get a private Zodiac and guide (it's who you know). The guide kept the boat "beached" on these rocks as groups of penguins came down from the vertical cliffs to the right (not pictured). In the second after this photo the water swelled and all were gone.
If smell was a decider, these Chinstrap Penguins should probably never get out of the water. Cute and harmless (except to shrimp, fish and squid) these little birds stink. Owing to their diet and that they pad around in their own feces when not hunting. I'd like to think these six were headed into the water for a bath but, no, it's for more stinky fish.
