North out of Fairbanks Alaska on the Steese Highway to the Elliot Highway, north to Dalton Highway, travel north approximately 250 miles to Atigun Pass.
Found this beautiful male musk ox feeding on grass just south of Atigun Pass along the Dalton Highway in Alaska's Arctic region. The Dalton Highway, or "the Haul Road" is not a highway in the typical way, but rather, it is a two lane gravel/paved road that stretches from Livengood northward to Deadhorse. Atigun Pass is a steep grade through the Brooks Range and is the barrier between the boreal forests to the south and the arctic tundra to the north. Normally, Musk Ox are found north of the Brooks Range, so this was a rare sighting indeed.
