In the early morning light, the Emperor penguins are tending to their active 2 month old chicks in their colony on sea ice near Snow Hill Island, Antarctica. Many penguins and chicks are sleeping upright close together as a gull flies overhead ready to capture any stray chick. This image was taken in late October 2018 while half of the adults were at sea foraging for food. The chicks must grow rapidly in the next two months so they can molt into their waterproof penguin feathers. It was special to meet an animal species that had no understanding or fear of humans.
