This red fox den is located in the middle of a neighborhood in Kill Devil Hills, on NC's Outer Banks.
I have watched this area for several years; some years the den site is occupied and other years it is not. This year the pair had six kits; one was hit by a car early one Sunday morning (a heartbreak to find it) and the parents moved the foxes to an alternate den site about a mile away a week later. At that point the kits were approximately 13-14 weeks old.
Two young red fox kits, a brother and sister, playfully practice the skills they will later need to survive as grown foxes in a suburban environment.
