During our trip to Yellowstone earlier this month, the bison rut wasn’t quite at its peak, but we were still able to see some bulls show some pre-rut aggression. This is the time when they challenge other males and compete for mates. In this shot, I was photographing two aggressive bulls when they connected at the right time and created an almost perfect mirrored image of each other. Bison can have noticeable physical variations, but these two looked like clones to me. They were the same size, had similar horn curvature, and showed the same intensity in their eyes. It’s times like these that make me love photographing wildlife even more. Every situation is unique, and in many cases, your favorite images turn out to be the ones you didn’t plan.
