One of the most breathtaking occurrences at many wildlife refuges is the surging flocks of geese taking off together, called a skein. It's amazing to watch them organize themselves so they almost seem to be of one mind. This morning at Merced NWR I was lucky to see the first flock of Ross and Snow Geese do such a collective take off just as the sun rose on a foggy November morning.
