I volunteer at the Carolina Raptor Center in the Medical Center every week. I also re-nest owls and hawks and transport injured and sick raptors. These beautiful birds have brought me much joy over the years and this is the least that I can do to give back to them in hopes they will be here for many generations to come.
This beautiful Barred Owl spent several months in raptor rehab at the Carolina Raptor Center after being hit by a car that broke both of his legs. The bones were surgically repaired with pins and it was a joyous day when this owl was finally able to stand on his own. When he was approved for release, I was asked to photograph the release. I took many photos of him. From coming out of the box, flying, and perching. But it was this photo, when he looked back at us that really captured my heart. He turned around one last time as if to say thank you, before flying off to start his new life.
