Curious Laysan Albatross Nesting

Nearest Area

Description
This Laysan Albatross was curious about the camera on a tripod, as she rose a little off her egg to see. The large 6 foot wingspan allows the bird to fly almost effortlessly across the ocean. They often will not start breeding until 8 or 9 years old. The birds fly to Kauai to have their baby. Once they mate, it is for life. They come to the island in November, eggs hatch in early February and parents depart late Spring and now young adults that were born in February will depart island usually in early Summer. When the baby grows up years later to have their own, they will build a nest as close to where they were born as possible. A beautiful and amazing seabird.
