This painted bunting was photographed during a birding trip to Rio Lagartos, a small fishing village
in the eastern Yucatan. The Gulf of Mexico lies just north of the town. The Yucatan is rich with bird life that
includes shore birds, pelagics, and a wide variety of inland migratory birds.
A beautiful, medium-sized bunting with bronze-green back and bright red rump and underparts. The head and nape are blue. The wings are dark with green shoulder patches. The female has green upper parts, yellow-green underparts and dark wings. Similar species include the Blue Bunting,
