Notes
The Salton Sea is a shallow, saline, lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, in Southern California's Imperial and Coachella Valleys
Description
These breeding pelicans are easily distinguishable by a fibrous keel during breeding season. After mating the keel disappears. Although these pelicans were plentiful several years ago when this image was taken, they are less so now because higher than normal levels of salinity in recent years have killed off large numbers of tilapia, the American White Pelicans primary food source.
