Salar de Uyuni outside of Uyuni, Bolivia.
Found in the high altitude regions of the Bolivian Altiplano, the Vicuna is a shining example of how conservation efforts can save species from extinction. Listed as endangered in 1960, Bolivia signed the Convention for Vicuna Conservation with Peru in 1969. Bringing the low population of 6,000 their numbers have increased to over 350,000 in current times. Now considered least concern.
