At a local wetland, Brick Pond Park, I often walk the ponds in the late fall and early winter, looking for woodpeckers. I was photographing this redheaded woodpecker picking up insect larvae from a dead tree and flying to a nearby oak tree to eat them. While in the other tree, a pileated woodpecker flew in to investigate the redhead's tree. The smaller bird became incensed and flew back to his feeding ground within seconds. What ensued was a minutes-long aerial battle, complete with aerobatics, screeching, and some serious pecking. The larger pileated woodpecker decided it had had enough of that, and flew off. Snoopy defeated the Red Baron, and neither bird was injured. I'll never forget having the opportunity to see this contest.
