I watched this six-year old grizzly bear mother and her cub over the period of a couple of weeks after they emerged from hibernation. The cub was born this last spring and it was the sow's first litter. Its sibling was killed by an aggressive boar the prior week. In this photo, the mom had just finished nursing behind a row of sagebrush when she came charging out of the brush. I was shooting from a respectful distance and was watching her behavior closely, so I had time to quickly ascertain that she wasn't aggressive. Rather she was frolicking in an easy lope with the cub chasing after her.
