Wildlife 2020 Contest Winners
Grand Prize: By Kelly Moran
Title: A Royal Sunset
“This photo was taken while on safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This majestic male was sleeping on top of the hill at sunset, while the rest of the Topi pride lounged below. He sat up for one quick moment, allowing me to take this photo before he fell asleep again.”
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM. Exposure: 1/400 sec., ƒ/3.2, ISO 125.
Second Prize: By Mitch Walters
Title: Anhinga With Fish
“While walking back to my car at sunset, I spotted this lone, backlit anhinga diving and looking for food. Suddenly, the bird got ahold of a large fish, spearing it with its dagger-like beak. However, the fish was indeed a slippery one, constantly freeing itself from the bird, forcing the anhinga to dive repeatedly until it finally secured it. I was fortunate to capture a brief moment where the silhouetted predator and prey were facing one another, the fins of the fish glistening in the evening light, before the anhinga tossed the fish in the air and swallowed it whole.”
Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM at 400mm. Exposure: 1/3200 sec., ƒ/7.1, ISO 500.
Third Prize: By Blaine Stauffe
“This photo was taken on my yearly trip to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I have been going there for a few years every November during the rut to photograph the deer, bear and owls. It’s a great place to photograph wildlife; the deer are very tolerant of humans. This buck was keeping an eye on his doe in the brush in front of him.”
Nikon D500, AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR at 210mm (315mm equivalent). Exposure: 1/250 sec., ƒ/5.6, ISO 400.
