Photo Of The Day 9/6/2012

Kilauea Lava by Ronald York

Ronald York took today's Photo Of The Day in Volcanos National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. The photograph is a finalist in the 2012 OP The American Landscape contest. You can see the full gallery of outstanding finalist images here. York used his Sony A77 Camera with a Sony 70-200mm F2.8 lens and he shot from a helicopter at approximately 600 to 700-feet of elevation. He shot at high-speed and a high ISO to help get a sharp photo.

York describes the day, "My fiancee and I were on a two week Photo/Vacation tour of the Islands and hoped to photograph the Lava flowing into the ocean on the big Island. To our dismay approximately a week before or trip the lava quit flowing and it appeared that we would not get that shot. A couple of days after we arrived the lava restarted flowing but had not made it to the ocean so we decided to take a Helicopter ride (it was also my birthday present) to  photograph it.  We didn't get the anticipated picture but did return with some amazing images."
