Wildlife Photographer of the Year Announced

The winners of the 2011 Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition have been announced in London, and this year there was nearly a sweep by Spanish-born photographer Daniel Beltrá. Daniel took home two awards, as Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Wildlife Photojournalist of the year, both in recognition of his documentation of the Gulf Oil Spill.

I look forward to the announcement of these awards every year with great anticipation since it represents some of the most creative work being done photographers all over the world. And yes, I submitted some work this year as well, and no - I didn't win a thing. So it goes...

But big kudos to my Seattle neighbor, Daniel.

Daniel’s work was truly worthy of the awards, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy.

Let’s also note that Paul Souders, who is another fellow Seattle-based photographer, took home 1st and 2nd Place in the Underwater category. Paul has done some incredibly bold trips the last few years, so it is exciting to see his work get recognized by a larger audience. His website is http://www.worldfoto.com/

Very nice work. A little less promotion please. Not all of us have the equipment, location or means to travel. But we stumble on in our love of outdoor photography anyway
